Brendan Young

Brendan graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School majoring in cinematography and film direction. His graduation film, the comedy sci-fi thriller, “Wild Planet” went on to win a number of local and international awards launching him into a diverse filmmaking career working as a cinematographer and editor on an array of award winning short films, music videos, commercials and tv promos, which then evolved into a successful career as a director working in film, television and commercials. Early in his commercials directing career he was selected to participate in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Director’s Showcase in Cannes as well as collecting various industry awards including a Mobius Award for one his powerful WorkCover spots. His relationship comedy short film, “Three Chords And A Wardrobe” - an early project for maverick producer Bruna Papandrea - was a hit on the international festival circuit including winning the “Best Australian short film” at the 1998 Sydney Film Festival as well as being theatrically distributed in the U.S. in select theatres and broadcast on the Sundance Channel along with a slew of international cable channel and broadcasters. Brendan combined his work as a TVC director working in Australia and internationally with various filmmaking projects and television documentaries including directing episodes of the Southern Pictures/ABC TV documentary series "Family Confidential" (2014). Writing and directing the AFI/ACTAA award-winning documentary for ABC TV “You Only Live Twice – The Incredibly True Story of The Hughes Family” (2010). His other broadcast documentary credits include: “The Two Donnies" – The Two Of Us” (SBS Independent, 2006); ”Love and Anarchy - The Wild World Of Jaime Leonarder” (SBS, 2002) And "Conspiracy" for the 10 Network/ Mystery Clock Cinema (1999). Recently Brendan has been focusing on developing a slate of long-form drama projects including the noir crime-action- thriller, “The Widow” set in Melbourne, Australia in the early 1960s. In 2019, a 30-minute short “proof of concept” version of the film was launched on to the international festival circuit and to date the film has collected more 218 awards. "The Widow" has since been developed into a 6-part limited drama series for streaming and is being pitched to various platforms and producers. Brendan continues to develop other projects such as "Mantis" - a dark, drama-comedy horror feature film and “The Hellraisers" - a satirical relationship drama. Over the past 2 years he has been developing a 6 part crime-espionage-thriller set in Saigon, Vietnam in the volatile year of 1963 called "Saigon '63: Violent City” with Saigon-based production company Crea-TV. His recent narrative music video for the British Band CousteauX, “When The Bloom Has Left The Rose” has collected more than 22 awards on the international festival circuit so far
