Alex is a London-based director with 13 years of experience in the filmmaking industry. Born in France to Sino-Cambodian parents, he faced language barriers early on, which led him to find solace in drawing and photography. This passion paved the way for his entry into the world of visual storytelling.
At 16, Alex enrolled in art school, later studying Moving Images at Central St Martins, London. He began his career focusing on the aesthetics and technical aspects of filmmaking, working on music videos before transitioning to creating content and short films as a director, DP, and editor. Throughout this time, Alex gained valuable experience and insight into different aspects of filmmaking by working as an AD, AC, DOP, and editor on various projects.
Over time, Alex became captivated by the power of emotionally impactful stories. He began creating short films, such as "A Monster" (2018) and "Aniccam" (2020), using his own savings and free time. These projects allowed him to experiment, learn, and grow as a director without the constraints of deadlines or clients.
In 2022, Alex graduated from the Directing Commercials course at the National Film & Television School. This experience taught him to be deliberate with his creative choices, strengthened his leadership skills, and emphasized the importance of collaboration and communication with his team. In 2023, Alex shadowed Phil Barantini on set for the BBC sequel of "Boiling Point," expanding his understanding of directing and storytelling even further.
Alex's passion for unique stories and underrepresented voices led him to explore a variety of genres, including thriller, sci-fi, horror, and comedy. Inspired by directors like Jordan Peele and Justin Lin, he aims to create stories exploring issues of race and cultural ambivalence through the lens of genre. Alex's fascination with IP adaptations such as video games and anime reflects his dedication to bringing fresh and respectful perspectives to the big screen.
Believing in the importance of giving underrepresented voices a platform, Alex strives to be a part of creating more diverse and inclusive film projects that reflect the world we live in and bring us closer together. By combining his artistic background and filmmaking expertise, Alex creates visually striking and story-driven work.
Alex is committed to honing his craft through workshops and continued learning, aiming to gain confidence in his narrative voice and point of view. This dedication will allow him to tell stories that can truly move people and leave a lasting impact.
