FILMMAKER | DOP | DIRECTOR | ARTIST Samgar Turkenburg is an independent filmmaker and director from The Netherlands. The company he started is ‘Samgar Productions’ and under that name he has made multiple films / documentaries and music videos since 2012. PROFESSIONAL Samgar Productions started as a company to make music videos for bands such as ‘Golgotha Cries’ and ‘Serpents Seduction’. Aer this he worked with companies for testimonial videos, short documentaries and various art film projects. This progressed into short films like ‘Requiem’, ‘Seppuku’, ‘Darkness of the Light’ and ‘Rücksichtsloss’ published on various video platforms. In 2017 he started the first feature film from an original screenplay called ‘Diaken’. In 2022 he released the latest film ‘Verlorenen’. For his films he has received multiple prizes at film festivals such as ‘Toronto Independent Film Festival’ and the ‘Cinematography Awards’ where he won ‘Best European Film’. VISION All films are Dutch spoken films and the vision behind it is to make authentic local stories into mostly thrillers and drama films. He always works with a small group of crew and the cast consists mostly of amateur actors. The reason for this is to ensure that the acting is as true to daily life as possible so that the film has a documentary feel to it. He also finances the projects himself so he has complete creative freedom with the film and can stay as independent as possible. His films focus on interpersonal struggles where the main character has to deal with. Most of his characters are very much a representation of people he meets in daily life that attract his attention because of their strange behavior or their life story. His goal is to give the audience an experience that leaves them with a physical feeling of sadness when the end credits of his films start rolling. VISUAL STYLE Samgar has a distinct visual style which combines black and white with color to give more contrast to the emotions that the main character endures. Most of his scenes are long and almost all shot from a tripod to give an almost painting-like ambience to the visual storytelling. CAREER Samgar has a degree in Communication and Multimedia Design. He works as videographer and graphic designer besides making films. While attending college he got interested in filmmaking while doing an internship at a broadcast network. He specialized in his education in documentary films because of his passion for film. He started making documentaries in his spare time while working as a graphic designer. Still to this day he works as a designer and videographer and makes his films in his spare time. NEXT Samgar is now working on his next film which will also be an independent feature film that will be shot at the end of 2023 and if all goes well released in October of 2024. This film will be a drama about an alcoholic with the syndrome of Korsakov. It will show the interpersonal struggles of a man that is slowly losing his mind while he sees his life being ruined in front of his eyes.
