Writer / Director / Producer, PJ Germain was born in Queens, New York in 1986 to West Indian and Haitian immigrant parents. He spent most of his youngest memories with a camera in hand and by age of 10, dreamt of commanding a set, telling stories through images and seeing his own films in a theater full of people. But then, at the young age of 11 years old, he died.
PJ was dead for only two-and-a-half minutes but traversing the strange fever dream back to the realm of the living felt like a lifetime. On the long road to recovery, the lingering thought of being given a second chance drove him to follow his passions unapologetically. As soon as he could, PJ escaped into crafting short films and continued to hone his filmmaking voice with his undergraduate studies in college.
PJ relocated to Los Angeles in 2008 and gained valuable set experience as an assistant on the Dimension Films production of Alexandre Aja's PIRANHA 3D. Following that, PJ began directing music videos for independent artists across the city and displaying at the music video industry's breeding ground, VideoStatic.
After writing and directing a pair of spec commercials for Land Rover starring a Blue Heeler Australian Cattle Dog named Bob in 2011, PJ earned a spot in the incredibly selective Directing Fellowship at the American Film Institute Conservatory. While being mentored by some of the worlds best filmmakers, writers and producers, PJ was awarded grants from the LucasFilm Foundation, Deluxe, Kodak and Panavision for his graduate thesis film, GHOST LIGHT. The film, starring the affable Abraham Benrubi, is a love letter to the pulp horror comics of the 1950's as well as an homage to the 1980's science fiction films PJ grew to love as a young child.
Returning from a successful festival run which garnered awards across the globe, PJ became attached to direct the feature film, WHISPERS OF THE DAMNED; a western horror by Kent Harper, the co-writer/producer of Jennifer Lynch's SURVEILLANCE. After leaving the genre bending project due to a lack of financing, PJ penned another love letter to 1980's sci-fi cinema with the feature CATALYST as well as an hour-long scifi series called EXODUS. As the need for web based content emerged, PJ returned to branded videos and short films while both projects remain in active development.
As Covid hit in 2020, the slate of projects that PJ had been developing slowly got pushed to the backburner. With the creative itch still persisting, PJ and a group of close filmmaking friends banded together and created the short film, BEND IN THE ROAD during the early months of the global pandemic. Knowing that the film would require them to be in close proximity during a time in which everything was so unclear, PJ reworked the script to allow for a skeleton cast and crew to work safely together. With passion, drive and most importantly, believing in the story they were telling, Bend in the Road was produced and went on to live a life of its own in front of festival audiences across the globe, landing exclusively at Vidiverse in 2022.
Utilizing his unique life experiences as a first generation American, PJ strives to represent his community in mainstream cinema while hoping to inspire new filmmakers to reach for their dreams and aspirations. PJ is also a proud member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild IATSE Local 700 and when not behind the camera or in the edit room, PJ can be found making music or spending quality time with his wife and son. With his exuberant love of filmmaking, PJ maintains a development slate of features and shorts that speak to who he is as a storyteller.
